Keerthi Kiran, Grassroutes, India

Keerthi Kiran is the 24-year old director and co-founder of a for-impact organization called Yofa (Short for Youth Factor: www.yofa.org). He holds a B.E(Hons.) Electronics & Instrumentation degree from BITS-Pilani and has been selected as Paragon100 fellow for 2010, one of Asia’s most inspiring entrepreneurs and social changemakers as well as a StartingBloc Boston 2010 fellow (StartingBloc educates, inspires and connects emerging leaders to drive social innovation across sectors from around the world). Keerthi has given talks on the development sector, entrepreneurship and youth topics at various forums and shares a deep interest in start-up projects.
As director of Yofa his responsibilities include strategy, program planning and day to day management. Yofa works on exciting projects to engage young people into social action. He serves as Program Director for Yofa’s flagship program Grassroutes. Grassroutes is a fellowship program encouraging young people to travel to rural India: to work on “changemaking” projects, live with the community and do their bit to change the world. Grassroutes wants young people to discover the changemaker within them and to inspire others through stories of their journey.

Grassroutes is a fellowship for urban educated youth to spend a summer working with change-makers and social entrepreneurs, who are creating sustainable, significant impact in different parts of the country. During their stay, the fellows work on a pre-defined project and in addition, don the role of social journalists – researching, understanding and capturing unheard stories from the grassroots – of people, places, challenges, solutions, hope and above all, the impact that individuals can create.
Using mainstream and non-conventional media channels, the Fellows share these stories to inspire, challenge and creatively engage youth into social action, and serve as ambassadors of change in their respective communities.
Grassroutes program has three golden objectives:
1.    To provide young people with a transformational experience
2.    To add incremental value to the organizations
3.    To inspire a larger number of people by stories and experiences of Grassroutes fellows
Our vision is to grow socially conscious young leaders who are committed to social change. Grassroutes is where the journey begins. It is a sensitizing experience which sets the context for a young person to look within, to find answers and perspectives on social problems, and to discover the changemaker within.
