Video Volunteers
Jessica Mayberry received her BA in Modern History and Modern Languages from Oxford University in 1999. A video journalist with extensive experience training rural people to use media, Jessica believes that video technology can empower the poor (women especially) to a find a voice. Prior to Video Volunteers, Jessica worked in television in New York at Court TV, the Fox News Channel, and CNN.

She is the Founder and Director of Video Volunteers, a New York-based nonprofit that trains poor communities to run their own ‘Community Video Units’ as permanent sources of news and inspiration. Working with the media NGO Drishti and 12 other local NGOs, Video Volunteers has created a network of 75 Community Video Producers, who together have made more than 100 films in two years that have been seen on widescreen projectors by more than 140,000 villagers and slum dwellers. The goal of these community-based productions and screenings is to empower people to take action, empower government to take action, develop leadership and expand the scale and reach of NGO programs. Video Volunteers has won numerous awards: An Echoing Green Fellowship, the Stern Business School Business Plan competition, the Knight Foundation’s News Challenge, a Tech Award, a Development Gateway Award Shortlist, and the King Baudouin (of Belgium) International Development Prize (Finalist).
