Susana Frazao Pinheiro
Susana has been working in global health for over 15 years, from various perspectives. She has carried out work in the UK, USA, Portugal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Mozambique and Angola. Susana works with both communities and governments (Ministries of Health), has spent several years between academia and fieldwork, and has been working as a consultant with the United Nations.
Her passion to find solutions to the HIV epidemic led her to join a team working on a clinical trial for an HIV vaccine funded by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI). Yet the lack of medical infrastructure in so many countries contrasting with the access of businesses to even the farthest villages led her to seek to understand how to combine the reach of private sector approaches with the mission in healthcare. A Skoll Scholarship on Social Entrepreneurship from the Skoll Foundation/ Skoll Center in Oxford allowed her to pursue an MBA at Oxford SAID Business School to further develop these ideas. After completing her MBA and working as consultant at the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, United Nations, Susana launched Local Insight Global Impact (LIGI). LIGI aims at finding lasting and innovative solutions to stop the spread and impact of disease globally.
Susana is originally from Portugal. She holds a Doctorate in HIV Immunology/ Clinical Medicine from the University of Oxford, an MBA from Oxford SAID Business School, and a MSc in Tropical Medical Microbiology from Portugal. She has published in peer review journals including Cell. She is fluent in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and speaks French and basic Haitian Creole. Susana is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and the Economic Research Council, UK.
